Strong indications have emerged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has picked Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, where she is expected to run alongside the party’s governorship flagbearer, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.

According to reports from sources within the party, Sonayon-James has been selected following extensive consultations among key stakeholders and party leaders as the APC intensifies preparations to retain its hold on Lagos State in the next electoral cycle.
Her emergence is being viewed by political observers as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots appeal, particularly among women, youths and residents of the Lagos West Senatorial District particularly the Badagry axis.
Party insiders say her track record in community engagement, political mobilization and public service played a significant role in her consideration for the position.
Princess Sonayon-James currently serves as the Assistant State Woman Leader of the APC in Lagos State, where she has been actively involved in grassroots mobilization and party-building initiatives.

Beyond politics, she is widely recognized as an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) expert and Sustainability Risk Consultant, bringing extensive professional experience in governance, sustainability, community development and public policy.
A native of Kweme Kingdom in Badagry West LCDA, Sonayon-James hails from a respected royal lineage and has built a strong political profile through years of service and engagement with local communities. Her contributions to development initiatives and empowerment programmes have earned her recognition within and outside political circles.
Prior to her current position within the APC structure, she served as Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West LCDA, where she championed several community-focused programmes aimed at improving the welfare of residents and supporting local development efforts.
Political analysts believe that the Hamzat-Sonayon-James ticket, if officially confirmed, could provide the APC with a blend of administrative experience, grassroots connectivity and gender inclusion as the party prepares for what is expected to be a highly competitive governorship election in Lagos State.
While reports of her selection have generated excitement among party supporters and stakeholders, the APC is yet to issue an official statement confirming the deputy governorship nomination. Party leaders are expected to make a formal announcement in the coming weeks as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.
The development shortly after Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat reportedly emerged as the APC governorship candidate a week ago , setting the stage for what could become one of the most closely watched political contests in Lagos State’s recent history.
