In an unprecedented move, members of the House of Representatives have unanimously decided to reduce their salaries by half for a period of six months. This decision, a demonstration of solidarity and shared sacrifice, aims to address the economic challenges and food insecurity currently afflicting the Nigerian populace.
The resolution followed an amendment to a motion proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu. The House, upon deliberation, recommended that lawmakers contribute 50% of their monthly salary of N600,000 to support Nigerians during these trying times.
Kalu’s revised motion drew inspiration from a proposal by Representative Isiaka Ayokunle, who called on advocates of the upcoming nationwide protests to reconsider their plans and engage in dialogue with the government instead. Ayokunle’s suggestion was grounded in the belief that constructive conversations could lead to more effective solutions for the nation’s woes.
Speaking on the resolution, Deputy Speaker Kalu emphasized that the salary reduction would bolster federal government efforts to curb the rising prices of food items. “This initiative is not just about financial sacrifice; it’s about demonstrating our commitment to alleviating the hardships faced by our fellow citizens,” Kalu stated.
The decision marks a significant step by the House of Representatives to directly address the pressing economic issues and to show empathy and practical support for the Nigerian people during this challenging period.
