From representing Kenya on the international marathon stage to struggling to meet the most basic needs, the story of former professional marathon runner Beatrice Murugi highlights the harsh realities that can confront athletes after their competitive careers end.
Murugi once enjoyed a successful career in athletics, with her earnings providing significant support for her family. She reportedly invested her income in purchasing land in Nyahururu, constructing a home for her mother and financing the education of her siblings. Her athletic career enabled her to create greater financial stability for those closest to her.
Her circumstances later changed dramatically.
Murugi reportedly invested a substantial portion of her savings in a commercial lorry. The vehicle was subsequently involved in a fatal road accident near Delmonte. According to reports, the vehicle’s insurance had expired without her knowledge, leaving her without compensation while exposing her to substantial medical and liability related expenses.
In 2021, Murugi reportedly developed a severe and persistent stomach bloating condition that significantly affected her physical capacity. The condition made it difficult for her to resume the demanding training and casual work that had previously provided her with an income.
Her personal circumstances also deteriorated. Reports indicate that she subsequently lost the support of her husband and was left to provide for her child while dealing with health complications and severe financial constraints.
Today, the former elite athlete reportedly lives in a small rental room in Kerugoya costing approximately KSh 1,000 per month. She survives by picking tea and undertaking physically demanding casual work to provide food and basic necessities for her 10 year old child.
Murugi’s circumstances underscore a broader concern within professional sport. Athletic success can provide recognition and financial opportunity during an athlete’s competitive years, but those benefits may disappear rapidly when injury, illness, financial setbacks or other personal difficulties intervene.
Her case has prompted calls for Athletics Kenya and the Ministry of Sports to intervene, facilitate access to appropriate medical treatment and explore meaningful assistance that could enable the former athlete to regain financial stability.
