The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confiscated the international passport of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, as part of its ongoing investigation into the whereabouts of $490 million in Abacha loot recovered through Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT).
As a condition for his release at about 1 a.m. on Saturday, Malami has been instructed to report to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja every day for the next month. This requirement effectively prevents him from leaving the country during that period.
Malami, however, dismissed the allegations against him as fabricated, insisting that the truth will soon come to light.
According to an EFCC fact sheet, the former AGF has several issues to clarify over the next month.
“We have asked him to explain the whereabouts of the $490 million Abacha loot secured through MLAT,” an EFCC source said. “We are not accusing him of stealing the money, but he must account for it. This is one of the key issues investigators expect him to address.
“Given the large volume of documents he needs to review and the number of detectives he must engage with, we have seized his international passport.”
