In a significant stride towards promoting cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, the Federal Government today commissioned 12 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across Abuja and Lagos. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) led the commissioning ceremony, highlighting the government’s commitment to expanding the availability of environmentally friendly energy options.
The event, held in Abuja, saw the inauguration of several NNPC Retail CNG stations. Simultaneously, additional stations were launched in Lagos, marking a coordinated effort to enhance the country’s energy infrastructure. These CNG stations are part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Board Chairman of NNPC Ltd, Chief Pius Akinyelure, and the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Mallam Mele Kyari. Key members of the Senate and House of Representatives on Gas, along with senior NNPC management officials, were also present, underscoring the importance of this initiative.
Chief Pius Akinyelure emphasized the project’s potential to transform Nigeria’s energy landscape. “This is a monumental step towards a cleaner, greener future for our nation,” he stated. “The deployment of CNG stations will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also provide a cheaper energy alternative for Nigerians.”
Mallam Mele Kyari echoed these sentiments, noting the economic and environmental benefits of CNG. “The expansion of CNG infrastructure is a critical component of our energy strategy. It supports our goal of delivering affordable and sustainable energy solutions to every Nigerian,” Kyari remarked.
The event concluded with a tour of the newly commissioned stations, offering attendees a firsthand look at the advanced facilities designed to support the widespread adoption of CNG. As Nigeria continues to diversify its energy sources, the introduction of these CNG stations represents a pivotal development in the nation’s pursuit of energy sustainability.
