From the bustling city of Ibadan to the football pitches of England, Belgium, and Canada, Folorunso “Foley” Okenla’s story is one of quiet courage, integrity, and perseverance. His journey reflects the heart of a man who stayed true to his principles, even when honesty seemed to cost him his career.

Early in his playing days, Okenla received a call-up to join Nigeria’s under-20 team, the Flying Eagles. For many young players, such an invitation would have been the opportunity of a lifetime. But Okenla, with a clear conscience, informed the coach that he was already over the age limit for that category. His truthfulness was not appreciated. Angered by his refusal, the coach vowed that Okenla would never play for the national team.

Fate, however, had a different plan. Some time later, while that same coach was away on a training course abroad, Okenla was invited to the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior national team. There he earned five caps, four of which were officially recognised by FIFA. Although he never scored for the national side, his presence on the pitch spoke volumes about his character and ability. His story became a quiet testament to integrity and perseverance in a world where shortcuts often overshadow sincerity.

Born on October 9, 1967, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Okenla built his reputation through talent and discipline. Though little is publicly known about his early education or upbringing, what stands out is his commitment to excellence both on and off the field. Beyond football, he is a devoted father. His son, Henry Okenla, followed in his footsteps by playing college football at Boston College in the United States, where he was listed as the son of Folorunso and Rachael Okenla. Henry’s profile also mentions his four siblings, Christina, Aila, Lola, and Grace, showing that Foley’s legacy of determination and family values lives on through his children.

Okenla’s professional career took him across three continents, reflecting both his ambition and adaptability. In 1991, he signed for Burnley in England, though he did not make a league appearance. Later that year, he joined Birmingham City, where he made seven appearances and scored once in the English Third Division. The following season, he moved to K.V. Turnhout in Belgium’s Second Division, and in 1993 he played for Montreal Impact in Canada’s American Professional Soccer League, making seven appearances.

Though his club career numbers may seem modest by modern standards, Okenla was among the early wave of Nigerian footballers who ventured abroad in search of opportunity long before such moves became commonplace. His versatility and courage to embrace new challenges earned him respect across borders.

Representing Nigeria at the senior level was one of his proudest accomplishments. He featured for the Super Eagles between 1988 and 1994 and was part of the squad that reached the final of the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations. Known for his pace, creativity, and direct attacking play, Okenla was a classic winger who always looked to beat his man, deliver crosses, and energise the attack.

After hanging up his boots, he occasionally appeared in the media, offering thoughtful commentary on football and national team matters. His measured voice and honest opinions echoed the same values that defined his playing career.

Today, Foley Okenla remains an understated figure in Nigerian football history, not because he lacked talent, but because he carried himself with humility and truth. His journey from Ibadan to the world stage, marked by resilience and decency, continues to inspire young athletes who dream of success without compromising their principles.

In a sport often shaped by chance and ambition, Okenla’s story reminds us that integrity still matters. Sometimes, defying fate begins with telling the truth
