Four people were confirmed dead and another injured in a fatal road crash on Wednesday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ipara Remo, Ogun State.
The crash occurred at about 4 a.m. around Straight Gate School and involved a blue Mitsubishi Canter with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said eight people were involved in the crash. Four male adults died, one male adult sustained injuries, while three others escaped unhurt.
The Sector Command spokesperson, Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday.
According to Odunsi, preliminary investigations indicated that speeding and wrongful overtaking caused the crash, while fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor.
He said the Mitsubishi driver, who was allegedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the moving HOWO truck while attempting to overtake.
Odunsi said the FRSC rescue team received the report at 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 4:39 a.m., recording a six-minute response time.
He added that the injured victim was taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
The two vehicles were subsequently handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation and necessary action.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.
He also advised drivers to get adequate rest before embarking on long-distance trips and to overtake only when it is safe and permissible.
