The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex leadership body of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has unanimously endorsed the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election in the state.
The historic endorsement was announced on Tuesday during a high-level gathering of party leaders and stakeholders held at Lagos House Marina, further signaling growing unity within the ruling party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Speaking on behalf of the Governance Advisory Council, elder statesman and prominent APC leader, Tajudeen Olusi, disclosed that members of the influential council reached the decision after extensive consultations and careful consideration of the future of Lagos State.
According to him, the endorsement of Hamzat reflects the confidence the leadership of the party has in his competence, loyalty, administrative experience, and long-standing contributions to the growth and stability of Lagos State.
Chief Olusi described the Deputy Governor as a tested technocrat and seasoned public servant whose years of service in government have prepared him for greater leadership responsibilities. He noted that Hamzat has consistently demonstrated commitment to the developmental vision of Lagos State and has remained a dependable pillar within the APC political structure.
In a major show of solidarity and support, members of the GAC also announced that they collectively paid for Hamzat’s nomination form, a move widely interpreted by political observers as a strong indication of the council’s determination to ensure a united front within the party ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
The announcement sparked excitement among party loyalists and supporters present at the meeting, many of whom described the development as a significant milestone in the political succession process in Lagos State.
Political analysts believe the endorsement by the GAC, regarded as one of the most influential decision-making bodies within Lagos APC politics, could shape the dynamics of the forthcoming governorship race and further consolidate Hamzat’s standing within the party hierarchy.
Dr. Hamzat, who has served as Deputy Governor alongside Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has over the years earned recognition for his role in policy formulation, infrastructure development, education reforms, and technology-driven governance initiatives in the state.
The latest endorsement comes amid increasing political conversations and strategic alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with many party stakeholders emphasizing the need for continuity, stability and sustained development in Lagos State.
