Today, I join Nigerians everywhere in celebrating the birthday of a truly inspirational leader, His Excellency, Evangelist Agbu Kefas, the Governor of Taraba State. His life and work embody the highest ideals of service, faith, and dedication to the betterment of his people, making him a role model not only to Taraba State but to all of Nigeria. As Dr. Tofunmi Ogunronbi, a former gubernatorial candidate, I had the privilege of witnessing Governor Kefas’s unique approach to leadership and faith during my recent visit to Jalingo. This experience reaffirmed my belief that Nigeria’s political landscape can indeed be a place of integrity and purpose, contrary to the stereotypes often associated with it.
Entering politics was no small decision for me. During my own political campaign, I faced a great deal of criticism and skepticism from those who believe that politics in Nigeria is inherently “dirty.” Many questioned my motivations, and others advised me to abandon the field, arguing that no honest person could thrive in such an environment. But I have always held a deep conviction that we cannot afford to leave this crucial space unattended. If good, determined individuals stay away from politics, then we leave the door open for those who may not share a commitment to the common good. I firmly believe that God can still use a few of us as beacons of light, guiding our nation toward a future defined by integrity and service. My time in Jalingo with Governor Kefas confirmed that this ideal is not only possible but already being realized in leaders like him.
Governor Kefas is a leader who seamlessly merges his public responsibilities with a deep and genuine commitment to his faith. Despite the weighty demands of his office, he actively serves as an Evangelist and General Overseer of The Great Gospel House Ministry. During my visit, I attended a three-day all-night prayer session at his church, where I was moved by his dedication and humility. Having traveled long hours from a previous engagement, Governor Kefas still took on the role of preacher and prayer leader for his congregation each night. He led with the same energy, empathy, and compassion that he brings to his political role, embodying the idea that leadership is not just about titles but about service to a higher purpose.
His example is a powerful reminder that politics and spirituality are not incompatible; rather, they can strengthen each other when approached with integrity and purpose. Governor Kefas’s life shows that a leader can be both a public servant and a faithful shepherd, leading his people with both moral conviction and a commitment to tangible progress. In a world where public service is often associated with personal gain, Governor Kefas has shown us that leadership can be—and should be—about lifting others and guiding them toward a better future.
The governor’s journey is particularly inspiring to young Nigerians. Many of our youth look at the political landscape with cynicism, convinced that politics is irredeemably flawed. Governor Kefas challenges this notion through his actions, showing that the character of politics depends on the mindsets of those who engage in it. His example encourages us to believe that we can redefine politics as a noble pursuit, rooted in service and accountability. His unwavering dedication to both his faith and his people shows us that good leadership is possible when it is grounded in personal integrity and a commitment to the greater good.
As a former gubernatorial candidate, I am deeply encouraged by his example, and I wish Governor Kefas a blessed and joyful birthday. His life is a testament to what Nigerian leadership can achieve when it is led by values, guided by faith, and focused on uplifting all. May he continue to serve as an inspiration to this generation and beyond, reminding us all that politics can indeed be a force for good when approached with a pure heart and a clear purpose. His Excellency Governor Agbu Kefas is a leader for today and a role model for the future—proving that we need not choose between serving God and serving our country; we can do both, and we can do both with excellence.
