At 29 years old, Princess Opeyemi Bright has made history by becoming the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom. She was sworn in as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham on May 16, 2025.
Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Princess Bright’s achievement is being celebrated as a milestone for diversity, youth empowerment, and the growing impact of Nigerians in global leadership.
During her inauguration, Princess Bright attributed her success to “God’s grace” and expressed her pride in serving her borough and representing her Nigerian heritage with humility and excellence. She encouraged others to take on leadership roles, saying, “May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise.” Princess Bright’s political journey began at 22 when she was elected as a councillor. Over the past seven years, she has championed youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic opportunity.
Her election as Mayor follows in her mother’s footsteps, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, who served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007. The rise of Princess Bright is part of a larger trend of Nigerians excelling in global governance. Nigerians in the diaspora, such as Kemi Badenoch, Chi Onwurah, Uzoma Asagwara, and Esther Agbaje, are breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes. Princess Bright’s achievement is also seen as a powerful example of the impact young people and women can have in shaping public life.
Her success holds valuable lessons for Nigerian policymakers, particularly in engaging the diaspora and investing in leadership development. Princess Bright’s historic win is not just a personal achievement but also a source of inspiration for young Nigerians worldwide.
