Lagos, Nigeria – In a shocking revelation, Nwoko Eric, a 42-year-old man from Abia State, disclosed how his former boss lured him into donating one of his kidneys to his ailing younger brother, only to abandon him after the transplant. The incident, which occurred in 2018, has left Eric struggling for survival and justice.
According to Eric, his boss, who was the Managing Director of a company in Ikeja, had assigned him to transport his ailing brother for dialysis at Saint Nicolas Hospital, Lagos Island. Upon returning from a trip abroad, the boss approached Eric with an extraordinary request. In exchange for donating his kidney, Eric was promised $20 million, a house in America, and connections to wealthy acquaintances in the United States.
Eric was enthusiastic about the proposal and agreed to donate his kidney after the necessary medical tests confirmed compatibility. The surgery took place on December 22, 2018. However, after the operation, Eric was left without any of the promised compensation or medical care.
A week after providing an apartment for Eric, his boss instructed him to resume work in the office, offering a monthly salary of N70,000. The boss warned that any absence due to health issues would result in a N30,000 deduction from Eric’s salary. Despite Eric’s complaints about weakness and deteriorating health, he received no assistance or compensation.
Desperate and ailing, Eric eventually informed his mother about the situation. His mother, Mrs. Gloria Nwoko, expressed her concern for her son’s well-being and urged the boss to fulfill the promises made before the surgery.
Counsel to the victim, Tony Dania, revealed that Eric’s boss’s younger sister, identified as Deborah, falsely posed as Eric’s wife during the surgery. He emphasized the illegality and criminality of organ sale, stating that consent for organ donation should be freely given with full understanding.
At the time of reporting, Eric’s boss remained in police custody at the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos. SP Hauwa Idris-Adamu, the spokesperson for the Zone 2 Command, confirmed that the boss was under interrogation, and the authorities were treating the case with the utmost seriousness.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ethical organ donation procedures and the need for justice in cases involving organ trafficking and deceit.
