Labour unions within the Lagos State Government’s broadcasting stations have issued a formal notice of their intention to embark on industrial action.
The strike, scheduled to commence on Monday, January 13, 2025, is a result of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio, Television, Theatre, and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) pressing for the migration of their members to the mainstream civil service.
In a bid to address the unions’ demands, a high-level meeting was convened on January 8, 2025, involving representatives of the Lagos State Government, led by the Honourable Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Hon. AfolabinAyant, and the leadership of the labour unions. The deliberations concluded with an agreement that the unions’ demands would be presented to the Lagos State Executive Council for consideration.
The government emphasized its commitment to due process, reiterating that entry into the Lagos State Civil Service follows established policies and procedures. Officials also appealed to union members to reconsider their decision to proceed with the strike, urging them to allow ongoing discussions to yield an amicable resolution to their grievances.
While the unions insist on their demands, stakeholders have called for dialogue and patience to avert disruption to critical public broadcasting services. The situation continues to draw attention, with the public and other concerned parties hopeful for a peaceful resolution.
Further updates are expected as the Lagos State Executive Council deliberates on the matter.
