Preparations for the maiden edition of the National Intermediate Games (NIG) Lagos 2026 received a major boost as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu formally inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC) tasked with coordinating and delivering what is expected to become one of Nigeria’s premier grassroots sporting events.

The inauguration ceremony took place at Lagos House, Marina, during a courtesy visit by members of the Main Organising Committee of the National Intermediate Games, signaling the commencement of intensive preparations for the historic tournament.

Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State Government to hosting a successful competition that will not only showcase sporting excellence but also create meaningful opportunities for young athletes across the country.

According to the Governor, the National Intermediate Games represents a strategic investment in youth development and grassroots sports, providing a platform for emerging talents to compete, develop their skills, and progress to higher levels of competition.

“We are fully committed to making NIG Lagos 2026 a resounding success. The Local Organising Committee has my full support as we work collectively to deliver an exceptional tournament that will showcase the immense sporting potential of our young people,” the Governor stated.

Governor Sanwo-Olu further noted that the initiative aligns with the state’s ongoing Lagos Sports Rebirth agenda, aimed at repositioning Lagos as a leading hub for sports development, talent discovery, and athletic excellence in Nigeria and beyond.

The Governor expressed confidence in the team assembled to drive the project, describing them as experienced professionals, sports administrators and stakeholders dedicated to expanding opportunities within the state’s rapidly growing sports ecosystem.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Mr Bukola Olopade who was visibly impressed by the well coordinated efforts of the DG of Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Lekan Fatodu on organizing a seamless three day facility inspection tour, commended Lagos State for its impressive level of preparedness and commitment towards hosting the inaugural Games.

Speaking at the conclusion of a three-day inspection tour of facilities earmarked for the competition, Mr Olopade singled out the DG of Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Lekan Fatodu for praise and said that the commission was satisfied with the progress made by the state in readiness for the event.

“I am impressed by the level of preparedness and commitment demonstrated by Lagos State as we conclude our inspection tour ahead of the maiden National Intermediate Games,” he said.

“Over the past three days, we inspected key competition venues, athlete accommodation facilities, and support infrastructure across the state. What we have seen gives us every confidence that Lagos State is ready to host a world-class Games that will set a new benchmark for athlete development and sports excellence in Nigeria.”

Olopade described the National Intermediate Games as a vital component of Nigeria’s long-term sports development strategy, emphasizing its role in bridging the gap between youth sports and elite-level competition.

“The National Intermediate Games is a critical pillar of our sports development agenda. It is designed to bridge the gap between youth sports and elite competition, creating a sustainable pathway for talent discovery, nurturing, and progression,” he stated.

The National Sports Commission chief also lauded Governor Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Government for their strong commitment to the success of the Games.

“I am particularly encouraged by the strong support and commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Government and it’s Sports Commission led by Mr Lekan Fatodu towards making this historic event a success. Lagos has a rich tradition of hosting major sporting events and I have no doubt that the state will once again deliver an exceptional experience for athletes, officials and sports fans across the country,” Olopade added.

He further stressed that the future of Nigerian sports depends on creating sustainable opportunities for young talents to compete and develop, describing the National Intermediate Games as a significant step towards building a stronger sports development framework for the nation.

“The future of Nigerian sports lies in our ability to create opportunities for young talents to compete, grow, and excel. The National Intermediate Games represents another bold step in that direction, and together, we are building a stronger foundation for the next generation of champions.”

Expected to attract talented athletes from across the federation, the National Intermediate Games will serve as a platform for talent identification, youth empowerment, and competitive excellence, while fostering national unity through sports.

As preparations gather momentum, stakeholders remain optimistic that NIG Lagos 2026 will establish a new standard for grassroots sports development in Nigeria and further strengthen Lagos State’s reputation as the nation’s foremost destination for sporting excellence.
