Parts of Lagos have been thrown into gridlock following multiple crashes on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Friday, July 24, 2026.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, two separate crashes occurred on both sides of Kara Bridge at 12:05 a.m. and 3:15 a.m. One person was confirmed dead in the incidents.
The crashes have caused heavy traffic stretching for kilometres on the expressway, with the gridlock spilling over into major internal roads in Lagos. Areas affected include Oba Ogunji Road, Alausa Secretariat, CMD Road, and Magodo.

The Sector Public Education Officer, Lagos Sector Command of the FRSC, SRC Elizabeth Oluwadamilola Jayeola, confirmed the accidents in a statement. She said rescue teams are currently managing the aftermath of the crashes.
“The first crash occurred at about 12:05 a.m. on the outbound carriageway towards Ibadan, involving five articulated trucks and one Toyota Sienna vehicle,” she said.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash resulted from speed violation and loss of control.” Jayeola urged motorists to exercise caution, especially at night when visibility is poor.
“Where night travel is unavoidable, drivers should reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, avoid dangerous overtaking, and stop to rest whenever they feel fatigued. Poor visibility and driver fatigue significantly increase the risk of road crashes,” she added.
She also advised motorists to seek alternative routes while FRSC and other emergency agencies work to restore normal traffic flow. The FRSC said it remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users.
