The Lagos State Government has taken a bold step towards transforming its public transportation system with the signing of a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). This groundbreaking agreement paves the way for the commencement of the highly anticipated Green Line Light Rail project, a key initiative in the state’s ongoing efforts to modernize its infrastructure and meet the demands of its growing population.
The Green Line, a 68-kilometer rail line, will run from the Lekki Free Zone to Marina, providing seamless connectivity to the already operational Blue Line at Marina. This new rail system will revolutionize transportation for millions of Lagosians, connecting critical areas such as Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ajah, while offering a more efficient, environmentally-friendly travel alternative.
Upon its completion, the Green Line is expected to initially transport over 500,000 passengers daily, with the potential to increase to more than one million as demand surges. The project will be spearheaded by MOFI and CHEC, who will handle the design, financing, and operation of the rail system. Once operational, the Green Line is set to redefine public transport, easing the burden of road traffic and contributing significantly to the state’s economic growth.
Speaking at the MoU signing, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of the Green Line as part of the state’s comprehensive Strategic Transport Masterplan. “The Green Line complements our existing rail lines, including the Red Line, which has already commenced partial operations. Together, these rail systems form the backbone of a fast, efficient and connected Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
The Governor also highlighted the success of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line, which recently marked its one-year anniversary. “Just yesterday, we celebrated the anniversary of the Blue Line, which has impressively served two million passengers without major disruptions. This demonstrates that Lagos is ready for more. We are not only prepared but excited for the future. In August 2024, the Blue Line increased its daily trips from 54 to 72, reducing travel time between Marina and Mile 2 from 30 minutes to 18 minutes,” he added.
Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored the far-reaching impact of the Green Line beyond just transportation, citing its role as a catalyst for economic development. “These rail lines are more than just infrastructure; they are engines for economic growth. They connect communities, reduce travel times, and improve the quality of life for millions of people. We are building a city that works for everyone,” he said.
The Governor also extended his heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast support of the project. “I must thank His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his unwavering backing and full endorsement of this project. His commitment to our shared vision serves as a powerful catalyst for its success,” Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded.
With the Green Line Light Rail project on track, Lagos is set to cement its position as a global city with a modern, efficient and sustainable transportation network, driving economic prosperity and enhancing the lives of its residents.
