The Governor of Seyi Makinde has officially emerged as the consensus presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement for the 2027 general elections, receiving his Certificate of Return amid mixed reactions from political observers and citizens concerned about rising insecurity in Oyo State.

The formal presentation of the certificate marked a significant milestone in Makinde’s political career, positioning him as one of the early contenders in what is expected to be a highly competitive race for Nigeria’s highest office.

Party leaders and supporters hailed the Oyo governor’s emergence as a testament to his leadership experience, governance record, and national appeal. According to APM officials, Makinde’s consensus adoption reflects the confidence reposed in him by stakeholders who believe he possesses the capacity to provide visionary leadership and tackle Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges.

The ceremony attracted party faithful, political associates, and supporters from different parts of the country, many of whom described the governor as a reform-minded leader capable of driving economic growth, national unity, and institutional development.

However, Makinde’s presidential ambition has also sparked debate among critics who argue that persistent security challenges in Oyo State remain a major issue requiring urgent attention. Recent incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, and violent crimes in parts of the state have generated public concern, with some residents questioning whether the governor should focus on consolidating security efforts at home before pursuing national office.

Political analysts note that while Makinde has earned recognition for infrastructure development, education reforms, and healthcare initiatives during his tenure, security concerns are likely to feature prominently in public discussions as the 2027 campaign season gradually gathers momentum.

Speaking after receiving the Certificate of Return, Makinde reportedly expressed gratitude to party leaders and members for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to offer purposeful leadership and work towards building a more prosperous, secure, and inclusive Nigeria if elected.

With the APM now officially presenting him as its standard-bearer, attention is expected to shift toward how the governor intends to address questions surrounding security in Oyo State while simultaneously projecting himself as a viable national leader ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The development has added another intriguing dimension to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, as parties begin positioning themselves for what promises to be a fiercely contested battle for the presidency.
