In the late hours of Tuesday, a serious accident involving two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses occurred in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos, leaving numerous passengers injured. The collision took place within the designated BRT lane on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, near Danco Filling Station.

According to an update from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on X (formerly Twitter), the injured passengers were promptly transported to a nearby medical facility for urgent medical care.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) provided further details in a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs, Nosa Okunbor. Initial investigations at the scene revealed that the accident occurred when one of the BRT buses, traveling towards Iyana Ipaja, swerved in a bid to avoid colliding with a commercial motorcyclist. The motorcyclist, who was illegally plying the BRT corridor with passengers, caused the bus driver to take evasive action, leading to a collision with an oncoming BRT bus.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported in the incident. However, the passengers aboard both buses sustained varying degrees of injuries. Okunbor confirmed that the injured passengers were swiftly taken to the nearest hospital for treatment before the arrival of LASEMA’s Emergency Response Team.

To clear the scene and restore traffic flow, LASEMA activated two tow trucks to remove the damaged BRT buses from the road. The incident has raised concerns over the illegal use of BRT lanes by commercial motorcyclists, a practice that poses significant risks to public safety. Authorities are expected to increase enforcement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
