The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 14 new confirmed cases of Lassa fever, bringing the cumulative number of infections recorded in the country to 1,035.
The new cases were recorded between Aug. 10 and Aug. 16, 2026, across Ondo, Bauchi, Edo and Benue states, according to the NCDC’s latest situation report made available in Abuja on Tuesday.
The agency also reported that cumulative deaths from the disease had risen to 252, with the case fatality rate increasing to 24.4 per cent, compared with 18.6 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.
The 14 cases represented an increase from the four confirmed cases reported in epidemiological week 32, when infections were recorded in Ondo and Edo states.
In week 32, the cumulative number of confirmed cases stood at 1,021, with 240 deaths and a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent.
The NCDC said the week 32 figure was a decline from the 17 confirmed cases recorded in week 31, indicating fluctuations in weekly transmission.
By week 33, 23 states had reported at least one confirmed Lassa fever case across 117 Local Government Areas.
Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue and Edo accounted for 87 per cent of all confirmed cases recorded cumulatively by week 33. The five states also accounted for 86 per cent of confirmed cases reported in week 32, maintaining their position as the states most affected by the disease.
The agency said people aged between 21 and 30 remained the predominant age group affected by Lassa fever during the two reporting weeks.
No new infection among healthcare workers was recorded in either week 32 or week 33.
The NCDC said it would continue surveillance and response activities across affected states, noting that Lassa fever remained a significant public health concern in the country.
