In a significant move towards bolstering Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with the Global Gases Group, led by Mr. Deepak Mehta, to establish state-of-the-art gas plants for the production of liquefied medical oxygen across the country. This strategic collaboration is set to revolutionize the availability of high-quality medical oxygen, ensuring a steady and reliable supply nationwide.
This partnership marks a pivotal development for Nigeria and the broader subregion, aligning seamlessly with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) and the President’s Executive Order aimed at unlocking the healthcare value chain. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the nation’s healthcare system.
The first phase of the project will see the construction of facilities capable of producing 100 tons of medical oxygen per day, strategically located in three urban clusters in the northern and southern regions of Nigeria. This strategic positioning will significantly enhance the accessibility of medical oxygen, catering to both current and future demands.
The MoU delineates several crucial commitments from both parties. The Global Gases Group will conduct comprehensive feasibility studies and business case development, invest in cutting-edge technology, gas storage and distribution infrastructure, and provide essential training and development for the project’s success.
Utilizing advanced cryogenic air separation technology, these plants will produce medical-grade oxygen with purity levels exceeding 99.5%, offering a sustainable, affordable, accessible, and scalable (SAAS) solution. This innovative approach ensures superior reliability and quality compared to traditional methods.
Beyond addressing immediate healthcare needs, this project will lay the groundwork for a more resilient and responsive healthcare system, better equipped to handle future challenges such as pandemics. It will also play a significant role in local skill development and job creation, contributing to the nation’s economic growth.
Reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed severe oxygen shortages, this initiative is a crucial step in safeguarding the health of Nigerians and citizens across the ECOWAS region.
