A Nigerian-born dermatologist, Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, has been elected president of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), becoming the first Black physician to lead the organisation since its establishment in 1867.
Dr. Ogunyemi, who practises in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, is also among the youngest physicians ever elected to head Canada’s national medical association. His emergence marks a historic milestone for the CMA and reflects the growing diversity of leadership within the country’s healthcare sector.
The Canadian Medical Association is the national body representing physicians across Canada, advocating for policies that strengthen healthcare delivery, improve patient outcomes and support the medical profession. As president, Dr. Ogunyemi will provide strategic leadership for the association while engaging governments, healthcare stakeholders and medical professionals on issues affecting Canada’s health system.
Outlining his priorities for the role, Dr. Ogunyemi said he would focus on improving access to primary healthcare, reducing the administrative workload placed on physicians, encouraging innovation in healthcare delivery and advancing a more equitable and inclusive health system that better reflects Canada’s diverse population.
His election has been widely celebrated by healthcare professionals and members of the Nigerian diaspora, who view the achievement as a significant moment for Black representation in medicine. Many have described his rise to the presidency of the CMA as an inspiration to young physicians, particularly those from underrepresented communities, demonstrating that excellence and dedication can open doors to the highest levels of professional leadership.
