Dr. Samuel Achilefu, a pioneering Nigerian-born radiologist, has developed innovative infrared goggles that allow surgeons to see cancer cells in real time during surgery.

Before this groundbreaking invention, it was nearly impossible for surgeons to visually distinguish every cancerous cell during operations. They often had to rely on post-surgical lab results to determine whether all tumors had been successfully removed, sometimes necessitating additional procedures.

Dr. Achilefu’s fluorescence-guided infrared goggles solve this problem by making cancer cells glow during surgery, providing real-time visual guidance. This technology significantly enhances surgical precision, reduces trauma for patients, and minimizes the need for follow-up operations.

A prolific researcher, Dr. Achilefu has authored over 300 scientific publications and holds more than 70 medical patents in the United States.

Born in Obingwa, Nigeria, he earned a PhD in molecular physical and materials chemistry, followed by postdoctoral training in oxygen transport systems at Oxford University.

His work represents a major advancement in cancer treatment and continues to make a global impact in the field of medical imaging and surgery.
