Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist, has expressed his outrage and disappointment over the recent book launch and presidential library inauguration of former Nigerian military leader, Ibrahim Babangida (IBB). Sowore believes that IBB’s actions 32 years ago, which led to the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election won by Moshood Abiola, have had a lasting negative impact on Nigeria’s progress.
Sowore argues that IBB’s refusal to hand over power and his subsequent actions led to the destruction of Nigeria’s economy and the suspension of the country’s democratic progress. He also accuses IBB of being a mastermind of falsehood and deception, citing the Yoruba proverb that “when a criminal wants to lie, he will say that his witness has died”.
Furthermore, Sowore emphasizes the need for accountability and punishment for those who have committed crimes against humanity, regardless of the time elapsed. He points out that even 90-year-old individuals are still being held accountable for their roles in the Second World War and other historical atrocities.
Sowore’s comments also highlight the importance of remembering Nigeria’s past and learning from its mistakes. He advocates for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved in the election annulment and other crimes committed during IBB’s tenure. Ultimately, Sowore hopes that IBB will be held accountable for his actions and that Nigeria will make progress towards a more just and equitable society.
