The Lagos State Police Command has disarmed and detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, following the fatal shooting of a young girl and the injury of another in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle, Lagos.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, November 5, 2026, between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., when police operatives were deployed to the area to quell a violent clash between two rival groups, known as the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys, over toll collection.
The groups were reportedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when officers arrived to restore order.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, ASP Olajide discharged his firearm during the operation, with the bullet hitting two girls.
The victims were initially rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital for emergency treatment. One of them, identified as Omole Taiwo, was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she was pronounced dead. The second victim remains hospitalised and is said to be in stable condition.
The police command expressed sorrow over Taiwo’s death and confirmed that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial investigation.
It said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary actions.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, has visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and assured them that justice would be served.
He also pledged that any officer found culpable would not be shielded from accountability.
The command reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and the protection of human life, urging members of the public with relevant information to report to the nearest police station or its Public Relations Department.
