On October 1, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a national broadcast to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary. In his speech, the President acknowledged the struggles faced by citizens due to rising living costs and unemployment but reassured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to finding sustainable solutions.
President Tinubu called for continued patience as reforms aimed at economic recovery and national stability are yielding positive results. He reflected on the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers, emphasizing how far the country has come in its six-decade journey of democracy and development. He noted that while challenges persist, Nigeria remains united and resilient, having survived numerous crises, including a civil war, to emerge stronger.
On security, the President highlighted significant progress in the fight against terrorism, with the elimination of over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders across the nation. He assured citizens that peace is gradually being restored in many northern communities, allowing displaced people to return to their homes. This, he said, would also lead to an increase in food production and lower food prices.
Regarding the economy, Tinubu outlined the efforts his administration has made in securing over $30 billion in foreign direct investment. He also underscored the government’s focus on stabilizing the fiscal sector, reducing debt service ratios, and implementing reforms to stimulate growth and reduce the tax burden on businesses and workers.
In addition, the President announced initiatives to strengthen local governments’ financial autonomy and expressed optimism in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, particularly through mechanized farming and public-private partnerships in infrastructure. He commended several states for embracing his administration’s agricultural programmes.
The President also revealed plans to hold a National Youth Conference to empower the country’s young population, which makes up more than 60% of Nigeria’s total. This conference, aimed at addressing issues such as education, employment, and security, would provide a platform for youth to participate in shaping the nation’s future.
Tinubu concluded his speech by calling on Nigerians to believe in the country’s potential and to work together to build a more prosperous and united Nigeria. He expressed hope for better days ahead and reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to creating opportunities for every citizen.
In closing, he extended his best wishes to all Nigerians on the occasion of the 64th Independence Anniversary.
