The Honorable (Barr.) Alabi Kolade David-led Conference 57, representing the 57 Council Chairmen of the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State, has strongly urged the organizers of the planned August 1 protest to reconsider their approach, stating that it does not serve the best interests of the nation. This declaration was made during a highly attended press briefing, where all 57 Council Chairmen were present.
The statement was issued following a strategic meeting held on July 23rd by the Conference 57 Chairmen in Lagos State.
During the meeting, Alabi advocated for demonstrations based on polling rather than protests. He emphasized that electoral processes offer a more constructive and legitimate means of expressing grievances and driving change.
In his address, Bldr. Olusesan Daini, the Public Relations Officer of Conference 57, stressed that youths should focus their energy on creative and innovative contributions to support Nigeria. Daini urged young people to invest their efforts in nation-building rather than participating in protests, which he believes do not provide constructive solutions to the country’s challenges.
Hon. Alabi Kolade David highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, pointing to the approval of a N70,000 minimum wage for workers and the implementation of financial autonomy for local governments. He also praised Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s efforts to ensure that various palliatives reach the most vulnerable people in every neighborhood.
The council chairmen collectively argued that expressing grievances through protests might not yield the desired results. Instead, they advocated for utilizing electoral processes to voice discontent and influence governance. They emphasized that the polls provide a legitimate platform for citizens to make their voices heard and impact governance.
The council chairmen concluded the briefing by appealing to the organizers of the planned protest to reconsider their approach, stressing that the future of Nigeria depends on positive and proactive engagement from its citizens. They believe that fostering innovation and creativity among the youth is essential for the country’s development and prosperity.
