REWARD ME OR KILL ME’: APC SUPPORTER PROTESTS ABANDONMENT IN ABUJA

In a striking and emotional scene at the All Progressives Congress (APC) headquarters, a young man stood with a placard claiming he had sold his house to support the party, only to be abandoned afterward. He lamented that his family is now in ruin, unable to meet basic needs. His story is painful, thought-provoking, and symbolic of deeper issues within political participation and expectations.

There are many ways to interpret this situation. First, it is important to establish that political parties do not sign binding agreements with individuals to justify extreme personal sacrifices such as selling one’s home. Participation in party activities is voluntary. No one is coerced into joining a political party, nor are they compelled to donate resources, time, or energy beyond their capacity. Such contributions, while commendable, are not contractual investments that guarantee returns in the form of appointments or financial rewards.

Politics is not, and should not be treated as, a business venture with assured profits. Unfortunately, some individuals approach it with this mindset, making risky decisions based on assumptions rather than reality. In many cases, those who eventually benefit from political victories are not always the visible foot soldiers who labored during campaigns. Often, individuals with influence, experience, strategic positioning, or established networks emerge at the forefront when governance begins. This reflects a complex internal dynamic where competence, political balancing, and governance needs sometimes outweigh loyalty alone.

The process of forming a government is multifaceted. It involves placing the right individuals in the right roles, prioritizing experience, and ensuring effective administration. Political parties, especially ruling ones, operate under immense pressure to deliver results and cannot afford failure. As a result, not every loyal supporter can be accommodated, particularly if they lack the necessary capacity or qualifications for public office.

That said, the story of this young man should not be dismissed or ridiculed. He represents a broader concern, the silent frustration of many dedicated party members who feel neglected after contributing to electoral success. His voice echoes that of countless others who remain unseen and unrewarded, struggling in the aftermath of elections.

This raises an important question about fairness within party structures. While politics cannot reward everyone with positions, there is a need for more inclusive and transparent systems that recognize commitment and dedication. A party that forgets its grassroots risks weakening its foundation. Loyalty should not be exploited, and long-standing members should not feel abandoned once victory is achieved. A more balanced reward system, one that extends beyond appointments, could help maintain morale and strengthen unity within the party.

At the same time, party members must exercise caution and personal responsibility. Extreme sacrifices driven by expectations of compensation are dangerous and often lead to disappointment. Support for a political cause should be guided by conviction, not entitlement. Members should prioritize sustainable engagement and avoid decisions that could jeopardize their personal and family well-being.

Ultimately, the true reward of political participation should be good governance. Once a party wins an election, its mandate extends beyond its supporters to all citizens. The focus should shift from personal gain to collective progress. Citizens, regardless of political affiliation, deserve policies and leadership that improve lives and build a stronger society.

This moment serves as both a warning and an opportunity. A warning against desperation and misplaced expectations, and an opportunity for political parties to reflect, reform, and reconnect with their base. Sustainable democracy requires both responsible leadership and realistic followership.
