Renowned statesman and former Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, has been officially announced as the Chairman of the 2025 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Press Week, one of Nigeria’s most prestigious media events. The programme, which holds today in Abuja, will bring together journalists, media advocates, policymakers and civic leaders from across the country.

The announcement was made by the event’s Organising Committee, which described Senator Al-Makura’s appointment as a “fitting recognition of his lifelong dedication to democratic ideals, media freedom and inclusive governance.”

This year’s Press Week which started from Friday July 18 to Friday July 25, 2025 themed “Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy and Society,” is set against the backdrop of an increasingly complex information landscape marked by misinformation, media distrust and threats to journalist safety. The organisers note that the theme reflects the urgent need to reassess the role of the press in safeguarding democracy and civic accountability.

As Chairman, Senator Al-Makura will headline the opening ceremony and deliver the keynote address, a speech that is expected to set the tone for robust discussions on the evolving responsibilities of journalism in a democratic society. His keynote is particularly anticipated given his background as a former broadcaster, lawmaker and two-term governor known for his pro-media stance.

In a statement ahead of the event, Senator Al-Makura expressed gratitude for the honour and called for a renewed commitment to journalistic integrity and public service.

“This is a moment of national reflection,” Al-Makura said. “At a time when disinformation, media fatigue, and democratic uncertainty are gaining ground globally, this year’s Press Week offers a vital opportunity for media professionals to reassert the values of truth, accountability, and civic responsibility.”

He further emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue between the media and the government, stating that “this forum should not be viewed as a battleground, but as a bridge for collaboration, learning and mutual accountability.”

Throughout his public service career, Senator Al-Makura has championed the principles of press freedom and open communication. As Governor of Nasarawa State (2011–2019), he pioneered an open-door policy for journalists and ensured grassroots access to government information. In the Senate, he was a vocal supporter of media rights legislation, journalist protection laws and policies aimed at strengthening democratic institutions.

The 2025 edition of the FCT Press Week is expected to be one of the most consequential yet, featuring a wide range of activities, including panel discussions, workshops, awards and policy dialogues. Key topics include:

  • Election coverage and media ethics
  • The challenge of fake news and disinformation
  • Promoting public trust in journalism
  • Media innovation in the digital age

The event will also attract participants from across sectors — including civil society groups, academic institutions, media development organisations, editors’ guilds, legislators and budding journalists from tertiary institutions — all convening to chart the future of Nigerian journalism.

The Organising Committee noted that Senator Al-Makura’s selection was based on his reputation for integrity, bipartisan approach and longstanding belief in journalism as a cornerstone of democracy.

With national elections on the horizon and media institutions at a critical crossroads, the 2025 FCT Press Week promises to be a landmark gathering that reaffirms the enduring relevance of the press in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
