In a recent candid interview with Pulse Nigeria, Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), made bold assertions about his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi. Sowore claimed that Obi was deceitfully packaged for the 2023 elections to mislead Nigerians.
Sowore, who has built a reputation for his outspoken criticism of the political establishment, stated he was the first to uncover Obi’s alleged corrupt practices during his tenure as Anambra State Governor. This revelation, according to Sowore, was part of his broader campaign against the entrenched political elite in Nigeria.
Throughout his career, Sowore has maintained a consistent stance against the political class, highlighting the need for a revolutionary change led by the youth. He has been particularly vocal against President Bola Tinubu and his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, scrutinizing their records and policies. Sowore’s criticism of Tinubu dates back to when Tinubu was Lagos State Governor, and he has also been a relentless critic of Buhari’s administration.
As the 2023 elections approached, Sowore directed his scrutiny towards Peter Obi, who had emerged as a significant figure in the Labour Party after departing from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022. Obi’s campaign gained traction among many Nigerian youths, presenting a challenge to the traditional political order.
Sowore explained his skepticism towards the Obi movement, emphasizing his disdain for dishonest politicians. “What is true is that I have a general disdain for the dishonesty of Nigerian politicians. I have disdain for lacklustre performance, and whenever anybody then comes up as a politician or who wants to run Nigeria, they come with this fraudulent packaging,” Sowore said.
He added that his criticisms were consistent, whether directed at Tinubu or Obi, and that his goal was to expose any form of deceit. “My position about Peter Obi has been consistent. The same way my position about Tinubu has been consistent. It is only that the people who are now on the internet as influencers weren’t born at the time when I’ve been against all these terrible politicians, including those in the military,” Sowore remarked.
Reflecting on his past efforts, Sowore noted his role in revealing Tinubu’s alleged drug history in Chicago through his platform, Sahara Reporters, back in 2006 or 2008. He lamented the lack of recognition for his early work in exposing political corruption, suggesting that current supporters of politicians like Obi and Tinubu were not interested in these revelations when they were first made public.
Sowore’s unwavering stance highlights his commitment to challenging the status quo and advocating for a political revolution driven by integrity and accountability. His critique of Peter Obi’s candidacy underscores the broader debate about the authenticity and transparency of political figures in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
