A 13-year-old boy has died and several other people were injured after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s World Cup victory in the western Spanish city of Ciudad Rodrigo, local authorities said on Monday.
The municipality of Ciudad Rodrigo confirmed the boy’s death in a statement posted on Facebook.
“The City Hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sadness and extends its condolences over the death of a 13-year-old boy,” the statement said.
It added that what was meant to be a celebration of Spain’s World Cup triumph had turned into tragedy, with several others also sustaining injuries.
Emergency services said they received multiple calls shortly after 12:30 a.m. local time reporting that a fountain had collapsed onto a crowd gathered to celebrate.
Rescue officials said another youth was among those injured in the incident.
According to local media reports, the fountain gave way under the weight of numerous people who had climbed onto it during celebrations following Spain’s World Cup victory, the country’s first since 2010.
Authorities are yet to disclose the cause of the collapse, while investigations into the incident are expected to continue.
