The Nigerian Police: True Friends of Justice and Order

By Dr. Tofunmi Ogunronbi

In a world where negative stories often overshadow the good, the Nigerian Police Force, particularly the Zone 2 Police Headquarters at Onikan, stands as a testament to professionalism, integrity, and service. I recently had the privilege of witnessing firsthand how these officers handle matters with utmost care, discipline, and efficiency. This experience has forever changed my perception, compelling me to become a vocal advocate for the good work of the Nigerian Police.

Indeed, the age-old slogan, “The Police is Your Friend,” rings true in my experience. The officers I encountered embodied the very essence of this statement, treating everyone with respect, patience, and a genuine commitment to justice.

The general narrative about the Nigerian Police has been shaped by isolated incidents of misconduct and inefficiency, leaving little room for the commendable actions of countless officers dedicated to upholding justice and ensuring public safety. However, my encounter at Zone 2 Police Headquarters revealed a different story—a story of professionalism, empathy, and adherence to due process.

I observed a team of officers who listened attentively, acted decisively, and maintained impartiality throughout the proceedings. Their approach was not only methodical but also compassionate, emphasizing resolution over intimidation. It was clear that these officers viewed their roles as not merely a job but a calling to serve and protect the people.

Zone 2 Police Headquarters, in particular, has become a beacon of hope, showcasing what is possible when leadership and dedication meet. The officers at Onikan exemplify the values of transparency, accountability, and community engagement that are vital for restoring public trust in the force.

As a citizen, I feel it is my duty to highlight these positive examples and counter the prevailing negativity surrounding our police force. The men and women of the Nigerian Police face enormous challenges daily, from limited resources to high expectations, yet many of them continue to serve diligently. Their contributions often go unnoticed and unappreciated, but they remain undeterred, working tirelessly to maintain order and safeguard lives.

The Nigerian Police Force is not without its flaws, and like any institution, it requires reform and consistent oversight. However, we must also recognize and celebrate the good that exists within it. Painting all officers with the same broad brush of criticism is unfair and counterproductive.

It is time for us, as a society, to balance criticism with appreciation. Let us support the police officers who are working to make a difference, and let us advocate for reforms that will empower them to perform their duties even better.

To the officers at Zone 2 Police Headquarters, Onikan, and to all those in the Nigerian Police Force who exemplify professionalism and humanity: thank you for your service. Your dedication inspires hope for a safer, more just society.

Indeed, the Nigerian Police is our friend. They are not just a symbol of authority but a pillar of our community. Together, let us strengthen that pillar and work towards a future where trust and cooperation between the police and the public become the norm, not the exception.

As for me, I stand ready to amplify their voices and highlight their successes, ensuring that the good within the Nigerian Police is recognized and celebrated.
