Babagana Umara Zulum, the Governor of Borno State, deserves to be celebrated for his uprightness, empathy, humility, resilience, humanity, and simple lifestyle that reflect the spirit of true public service. From the very beginning of his tenure, including his first term in office, Zulum has shown that leadership is not about self-glorification but about service to the people. During the search for a suitable running mate for Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, many Nigerians openly nominated Zulum because of his integrity and proven record of performance. When his predecessor, Senator Kashim Shettima, was eventually chosen, Zulum gave his full and unwavering support, demonstrating rare loyalty, respect, and political maturity. He remains a trustworthy and reliable leader, fully committed to the welfare of the people of Borno State.
Zulum’s record as one of the best-performing governors in Nigeria is undeniable. His administration stands as a model of purposeful governance and judicious management of public resources. Rather than seeking attention or indulging in unnecessary showmanship, he lets his work speak for him. His projects across Borno State bear testimony to his dedication and genuine desire to uplift the lives of ordinary citizens.
What particularly impressed me on October 9, 2025, was the commissioning of yet another landmark project—a befitting 72-apartment, first-class housing estate for teachers. This gesture is both symbolic and humane, as it targets a group often neglected in our society. Teachers, the very backbone of our educational and moral foundation, have for too long been relegated to the background by many states and even the federal government. While most housing projects across Nigeria are built for the affluent and politically connected, Zulum has chosen to honour the true nation-builders by providing decent and affordable accommodation for them.

It is disheartening that in many states, government housing projects remain beyond the reach of ordinary workers. Civil servants, especially teachers, are often priced out of the homes built with their sweat and taxes. This sad reality indirectly encourages corruption, as many are left with no option but to compromise their integrity to survive. Even after decades of dedicated service, some teachers are denied their retirement benefits, forced to endure hardship in their old age. Zulum’s humane approach to governance stands in direct contrast to this neglect, proving that leadership can be compassionate and still effective.
Governor Zulum deserves commendation for his sense of justice, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the people of Borno State. His achievements are not mere political propaganda but tangible evidence of vision and sincerity. If Nigeria must move forward, it needs more leaders with the heart and discipline of Babagana Zulum.
Looking ahead to the post-2027 political landscape, many believe that Zulum should be considered for the nation’s highest office by 2031. However, given his loyalty and respect for his mentor and principal, Senator Kashim Shettima, it is possible that he may choose not to contest, especially if Shettima decides to run for president after President Tinubu. Nevertheless, if public opinion were to be sampled today, Zulum would undoubtedly rank among the most admired and trusted potential leaders in Nigeria.
Congratulations to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on yet another milestone achievement. May he continue to enjoy good health, wisdom, and humility as he carries on his exemplary service to the people of Borno State and Nigeria at large.
