The rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge, led by Engr. Umahi, Minister of Works, under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was a significant achievement. The newly paved and well-marked road, along with the installation of speed cameras, was a welcome development aimed at reducing accidents.
However, the illumination of the bridge has been poorly implemented by the contractor, JRB Solar Investment. Substantial part of the installed lights are no longer functioning, and those still operational emit very low luminance.
This has raised concerns about the safety and security of motorists using the bridge, particularly at night.
To address this issue, urgent rehabilitation of the bridge’s lighting system is necessary. This would not only improve visibility but also assist security agencies in performing their duties.
Furthermore, handing over the maintenance of the bridge to the Lagos State government, which has expressed its willingness to take on this responsibility, could ensure more effective management and upkeep of the infrastructure.
It is also recommended that the government consults with multiple solar energy service providers to find a reliable and efficient solution for the bridge’s lighting needs, rather than relying on a single contractor.
