In a landmark development, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the two main transport unions in Lagos, have agreed to be regulated under the government’s Bus Reform Initiative (BRI). This agreement marks a significant step towards formalizing bus operations in the state.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, will initially be piloted along the Lekki-Epe Expressway corridor. High-capacity buses operated by these unions will now be subject to the regulatory oversight of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), ensuring standardized operations and improved service delivery. Additionally, minibuses will be strategically deployed to serve inner routes, enhancing connectivity within neighborhoods.
At a stakeholder meeting held today, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, emphasized the transformative potential of integrating informal transport operators into the BRI. He highlighted that this move is anticipated to streamline traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance the reliability of commuting experiences for passengers along the busy Lekki-Epe corridor. Hon. Giwa further noted that the success of this pilot program could lead to broader adoption across Lagos, setting new benchmarks for efficiency and sustainability in urban transport.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, underscored the importance of partnership with the NURTW and RTEAN in executing these reforms. He encouraged the unions to take ownership of the initiative and actively participate in its implementation. The leadership of both unions, present at the meeting, expressed their support and commitment to the government’s vision. They pledged to optimize the inner route network, aligning with the overall goals of the BRI.
This collaborative effort between the government and transport unions aims to revolutionize public transportation in Lagos, ensuring safer, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable travel for all residents. As the pilot program unfolds, stakeholders are optimistic about its potential to bring lasting improvements to the city’s transport infrastructure.
