The National Orientation Agency, NOA, Osun State Directorate, has advocated for equitable access to anti-inflammatory inhalers as part of events commemorating World Asthma Day 2026.
According to the organisation, the celebration is in line with international initiatives to increase asthma awareness and facilitate access to necessary treatments for those who have the illness.
The theme for this year’s May 5th event is “Access to Anti-Inflammatory Inhalers for Everyone with Asthma – Still an Urgent Need.”.
Speaking during the event, the Osun State Director of NOA, Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen, pointed out that asthma is a major public health issue that affects millions of people worldwide.
“The condition inflames and narrows the airways, leading to breathing difficulties and, in severe cases, death if not properly managed,” he clarified.
“Early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and ongoing public awareness can prevent many asthma-related complications and deaths.”
Adebiyi also urged residents of Osun State to identify early symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, pressure in the chest, and chronic coughing.
Additionally, he counselled them to get medical help as soon as symptoms appeared and to closely follow treatment recommendations, including using inhalers correctly.
The director of the NOA “encouraged residents to avoid common triggers that could worsen asthma conditions, such as dust, smoke, pollution, and allergens”.
He urged legislators, medical professionals, and local authorities to “prioritise making asthma care affordable and accessible, particularly for vulnerable populations”.
“Every breath counts. We can save lives and enhance quality of life by working together to raise awareness, prevent disease, and provide access to appropriate care,”, he added.
