The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has approved the proposed establishment of State Police Services as part of ongoing efforts to decentralise policing in Nigeria.
The approval followed the passage of the Sixth Alteration Bill by the National Assembly and its transmission to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration in line with the constitutional amendment process.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Michael Ogbere, commended members on Wednesday for their consideration and endorsement of the proposed State Police Services.
In a related development, the House conducted the first readings of two bills: the Ijaw Cultural Heritage Bill and the Retirement Age for Magistrates and Chairmen of Customary Courts Bill, 2026.
The two bills are expected to proceed to subsequent stages of the legislative process for further consideration by the lawmakers.
