Spanish La Liga kicked off in a fiery and controversial fashion as rival teams, Barcelona and Real Madrid faced each other in the first leg of the Spanish supercopa.

Real Madrid emerged as victors from the first leg after triumphing over their arch rivals Barcelona with 3 goals to one. However, the main controversy of the match was the sending off of star man Cristiano Ronaldo for two bookable offences.

C.Ronaldo had received his first yellow card for taking off his shirt during his celebration of his first goal.

He was however given his marching orders not too long after, having gone down under contact from Umtiti, but the referee ruled that he had dived and hence he gave him a second yellow card leading to C.Ronaldo’s sending off.

While the sending off would rule Ronaldo out of the second leg of the Supercopa, there are fears that he may have to miss out on more matches for pushing the referee Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea on his way off the field.

Meanwhile, results from matches played in the EPL over the weekend are as follows:

Watford / Liverpool     3 – 3
Chelsea / Burnley        2 – 3
Crystal Palace / Huddersfield Town  0 – 3
Everton / Stoke City  1 – 0
Southampton / Swansea City  0 – 0
West Bromwich Albion / Bournemouth  1 – 0
Brighton and Hove Albion / Manchester City  0 – 2
Newcastle United / Tottenham  0 – 2
Manchester United / Westham United  0 – 2
