The Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV) has paid glowing tribute to the late Alhaja Kudirat Olayinka Abiola on the 30th anniversary of her assassination, describing her as one of Nigeria’s most courageous champions of democracy whose sacrifice helped shape the nation’s democratic journey.

In a statement commemorating the historic milestone, the Executive Director of CAIDOV, Mr. Gbenga Soloki, reflected on the life, courage, and enduring legacy of Kudirat Abiola, who was assassinated on June 4, 1996, during the height of Nigeria’s struggle against military dictatorship.

Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the widely acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, became a prominent figure in the pro-democracy movement following the detention of her husband by the military regime. Her relentless advocacy for the restoration of democracy and the validation of the June 12 mandate made her a symbol of resistance and ultimately a target of the military junta.

According to Soloki, Kudirat’s steadfast commitment to justice and democratic governance remains one of the most inspiring chapters in Nigeria’s political history.

“Thirty years later, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola remains the conscience of our nation. She was not an elected politician, yet she paid the ultimate price for standing on the side of truth and justice. She stood solidly behind her husband and the democratic mandate freely given by Nigerians. At a time when many chose silence out of fear, she spoke boldly and fearlessly. While the junta succeeded in taking her life, they failed to extinguish the ideals she represented,” Soloki stated.

The organization noted that following the incarceration of Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat emerged as one of the leading voices of the democratic struggle. She mobilized citizens, inspired women across the country, addressed rallies, and challenged military repression despite mounting threats to her life.

CAIDOV recalled that her assassination in Lagos shocked the nation and drew widespread international condemnation, further exposing the brutality of military rule and strengthening the resolve of democracy advocates.

As Nigeria marks three decades since her tragic death, the organization called for renewed efforts to preserve her legacy and ensure that the lessons of her sacrifice are not forgotten.

Among its key demands, CAIDOV urged the Federal Government to pursue full historical accountability regarding the circumstances surrounding her assassination. The organization stressed that the complete truth must be preserved in the nation’s historical records and that all individuals responsible for planning and executing the crime should be unequivocally identified and condemned.

The group also advocated for greater national recognition of Kudirat Abiola’s contributions to democracy, urging authorities to institutionalize her legacy through educational curricula, public monuments and the naming of national institutions in her honour.

“Kudirat Abiola deserves far more than occasional remembrance ceremonies. Future generations must understand the sacrifices made by those who fought for the freedoms Nigerians enjoy today. Her story should be taught in classrooms and preserved as a permanent part of our national consciousness,” the statement noted.

CAIDOV further emphasized the need for stronger protections for women involved in activism, journalism, and political participation, describing Kudirat’s assassination as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by women who challenge oppression and speak truth to power.

The organization maintained that the most fitting tribute to the late democracy icon would be the realization of the ideals for which she gave her life, credible elections, respect for the rule of law, protection of civil liberties, and strong democratic institutions.

“Kudirat Abiola’s blood watered the tree of Nigeria’s democracy. Yet, three decades later, the nation still grapples with challenges such as voter suppression, electoral violence, and threats to democratic participation. Her life continues to challenge us to ask what we are willing to sacrifice in defence of justice and democracy,” Soloki remarked.

CAIDOV also encouraged Nigerians, particularly women and young people, to draw inspiration from Kudirat Abiola’s courage, resilience and unwavering belief in a better Nigeria.

The organization called on both the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government to organize memorial activities befitting the national significance of her sacrifice and contributions to democratic governance.
Concluding its tribute, CAIDOV reaffirmed that Kudirat Abiola’s legacy remains a powerful symbol of courage, patriotism, and resistance against oppression.

“Alhaja Kudirat Olayinka Abiola did not die in vain. She stood firmly behind her husband, democracy, and the aspirations of millions of Nigerians.

Today, it is our collective responsibility to stand firmly behind her legacy and ensure that her sacrifice continues to inspire generations in the ongoing pursuit of justice, freedom, and democratic governance,” the statement concluded.
