An energy expert, Nick Agule, has advised the new minister of power, Joseph Tegbe, to revoke the licenses of Nigerian electricity distribution companies, DISCOs, and reassign them to competent operators.
Ajule made this recommendation. In an interview with Arise Television on Sunday,
He emphasized that Nigeria now produces around 5,000 megawatts of electricity, but the country requires over 200,000 megawatts.
This gap indicates that the new minister of power has a lot of work ahead of him. His statement on solving metering, gas supply, and transmission concerns raises worry. Those are operational issues. The minister’s duty is policy and administration, to create the enabling climate for the firms managing those issues to prosper.
“The minister ought to review the 2013 privatization process and inquire as to why the transmission industry was left unprivatized. Bottlenecks and persistent underfunding should be eliminated as a result,” he said.
