In a decisive move, the House of Representatives has urged the federal government to suspend the implementation of the recently signed Samoa Agreement. This call to action comes amid growing concerns and controversy surrounding the agreement, which was signed by the federal government on June 28.

The resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance, spearheaded by Sani Madaki, the Minority Whip, and supported by 87 other lawmakers. The motion highlights the need for a thorough investigation into the agreement’s contents and the circumstances under which it was signed.

Controversy erupted over the Samoa Agreement when reports surfaced alleging the inclusion of provisions related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights. These reports have sparked significant debate and concern among various stakeholders and the general public, prompting the House to take immediate action.

In light of these developments, the House of Representatives is committed to ensuring that the agreement is thoroughly scrutinized to address any contentious issues and to uphold the nation’s legislative and cultural values. The investigation aims to provide clarity and transparency regarding the agreement’s terms and the process by which it was finalized.
