President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed the decision of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) to adopt the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election.

The endorsement was reportedly made during a high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Dr. Hamzat visited the President alongside the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and prominent leaders of the Governance Advisory Council.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Dr. Hamzat disclosed that the delegation, led by GAC leaders, formally presented him to President Tinubu as the preferred consensus candidate of the Lagos APC.
According to him, the President welcomed the decision and gave his blessing to the arrangement, describing it as a step towards sustaining continuity, stability, and progressive governance in Lagos State.
The Deputy Governor expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, and members of the Governance Advisory Council for the confidence reposed in him, assuring party faithful and Lagos residents of his commitment to service, inclusive governance, and developmental continuity.
The endorsement is coming on the heels of growing support for Dr. Hamzat across major organs of the Lagos APC, with several party leaders and stakeholders openly backing his candidacy ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Sources within the party further revealed that members of the Governance Advisory Council had earlier resolved to support Dr. Hamzat’s aspiration by collectively funding his ₦50 million nomination form, a move widely interpreted as a strong vote of confidence in his leadership capacity and political acceptability.
Governor Sanwo-Olu and other APC leaders present at the meeting reportedly reaffirmed their commitment to party unity and the consolidation of the developmental achievements recorded under the progressive leadership in Lagos State.
Meanwhile, the Governance Advisory Council dismissed concerns raised by an aspirant who reportedly challenged the consensus arrangement, insisting that the adoption of Dr. Hamzat followed extensive consultations among party elders, stakeholders, and leaders across the state.
Political observers have described President Tinubu’s endorsement as a major development within the Lagos political landscape, noting that it further strengthens Dr. Hamzat’s standing within the ruling party and among key decision-makers ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
