The Lagos State Government has taken a major step toward boosting its agricultural sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Yihai Kerry Arawana Holdings Co. Limited (YKA), a Chinese agribusiness giant. The partnership is set to revolutionize the rice value chain in Lagos State, with a particular focus on enhancing the operational capacity of the Lagos Rice Mill in Imota, Ikorodu.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, speaking at the signing ceremony, highlighted the importance of this collaboration for the state’s agricultural development. “This partnership marks a significant milestone for us as we work to elevate the rice value chain in Lagos State. The expertise that Yihai Kerry Arawana brings to the table will undoubtedly make a lasting impact,” he said.
The agreement will see YKA providing technical and advisory support to optimize rice production at the Imota Rice Mill. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the Chinese company’s wealth of knowledge in rice milling and processing, alongside its advanced agricultural technologies, will play a critical role in improving efficiency. “By teaming up with YKA, we are tapping into their extensive expertise and state-of-the-art technology to modernize our rice production processes,” the governor added. “This will include training our local workforce, implementing modern agricultural practices, and offering other ancillary services.”
The partnership aims not only to enhance efficiency but also to foster a sustainable and profitable ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders, from farmers to consumers. “Our goal is to refine every aspect of the rice production process, from cultivation through to milling,” Sanwo-Olu stated, underscoring the broader vision of the initiative.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that this MoU is a testament to his administration’s commitment to building international partnerships that bring cutting-edge solutions and best practices into Lagos’ agricultural sector. “Signing this agreement signals our dedication to leveraging global expertise to improve our local industries. We are optimistic about the future and the remarkable achievements we can accomplish together,” he concluded.
The Imota Rice Mill, which is poised to become one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa, will play a pivotal role in driving Lagos State’s quest for food security, and the collaboration with YKA is expected to accelerate its operational efficiency and output, further cementing Lagos’ position as a key player in Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.
