A man solely identified as “Stone” has been allegedly shot and hacked to death during a cult clash on Sunday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The incident occurred at about 2:45 p.m., when a confrontation reportedly broke out between members of suspected rival groups along Wasimi Ake Road, specifically between Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank, leading towards the Ijemo Agbadu axis.
It was said that the deceased was a former member of the Buccaneer cult.
Oluseyi Babaseyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the event and stated that an investigation has started.
According to Babaseyi, preliminary investigations revealed that gunshots were fired in the neighbourhood, which caused panic as the suspected thugs engaged in combat and fled on foot toward nearby streets along the Wasimi Ake–Ijemo Agbadu axis.
He stated that the man was discovered lying in a pool of his own blood with serious gunshot wounds and a machete cut on his head when the division’s investigators arrived on the site.
Babaseyi emphasised that the incident was unrelated to the Yayi Progressive Movement inaugural program conducted at Ake Palace and did not take place there, as was commonly believed.
In his words, “Detectives of the Oke Itoku Division, Ogun State Police Command, have commenced a full-scale investigation into a suspected cult-related violent clash that resulted in the death of one male adult in Abeokuta on Sunday, 3rd May 2026.
“This incident did not occur at Ake Palace, did not take place within the venue of the rally, and is in no way connected to the Yayi Progressive Movement inauguration programme held at Ake Palace. “The clash was strictly confined to the aforementioned roadway and its adjacent neighbourhood.”
“Detectives of the division responded promptly to distress calls and were immediately deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, agents located one victim, simply named “Stone,” lying in a pool of his blood with significant gunshot injuries.
“In cooperation with the State Ambulance Service, he was quickly transported to the State Hospital in Ijaiye, Abeokuta, where the attending physician pronounced him dead. Since then, the body has been placed in the hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination,” he said.
The spokesperson also urged people to remain composed and reassured them that the command is actively seeking reliable leads to ensure the offenders’ prompt arrest and prosecution.
