President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on his 92nd birthday, describing him as a global literary icon, fearless advocate of justice, and one of Nigeria’s greatest national treasures.
In a goodwill message issued on Monday to mark the renowned writer’s birthday, President Tinubu praised Soyinka’s remarkable contributions to literature, democracy, and good governance, noting that his life and works have inspired generations across the world.
The President described Soyinka as an exceptional individual whose courage, intellect, and commitment to justice have continued to illuminate the path for humanity.
According to Tinubu, Professor Soyinka has consistently stood against oppression and injustice while remaining steadfast in his belief in the Nigerian project.
The President also highlighted Soyinka’s historic achievement as the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. He further acknowledged several other international honours received by the playwright and scholar, including the Benson Medal of the Royal Society of Literature, the Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Europe Theatre Prize (Special Prize).
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic struggle, Tinubu recalled Soyinka’s resistance to military dictatorship and his active role in the June 12 pro-democracy movement, noting that they both participated in the struggle for the restoration of democratic governance.
He described the elder statesman as one of Nigeria’s living repositories of history, knowledge, and courage, adding that his continued presence remains a valuable gift to the nation.
The President expressed appreciation for Soyinka’s unwavering faith in Nigeria and his consistent counsel on national issues.
“As he marks this birthday, I join the world in celebrating his profound influence on generations of writers, scholars, and activists, as well as his sacrifices for our nation,” the President said.
Tinubu wished the celebrated author, popularly known as “Kongi,” many more years of good health and continued service to humanity.
