Manchester United scored twice in stoppage time to rescue a dramatic 4-4 draw against Aston Villa in a Premier League encounter at Old Trafford on Sunday.
United manager Michael Carrick appeared destined for another damaging defeat after his side fell two goals behind within the opening four minutes.
Alysson opened the scoring for Villa in the first minute with a shot that slipped underneath goalkeeper Senne Lammens before Nicolas Jackson doubled the visitors’ advantage three minutes later.
Bruno Fernandes pulled one back for United from the penalty spot in the 16th minute after Boubacar Kamara fouled Matheus Cunha.
Former Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans restored parity for the hosts in the 44th minute with a powerful finish.
Villa regained the lead three minutes into the second half when John McGinn converted a penalty following Diogo Dalot’s foul on Alysson.
Leon Goretzka extended Villa’s advantage in the 53rd minute after Leny Yoro’s attempted clearance struck the crossbar and fell into his path.
However, United mounted a late comeback as Joshua Zirkzee reduced the deficit in stoppage time before Patrick Dorgu headed home the equaliser in the closing seconds following a poor punch from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
The result leaves Carrick’s future uncertain, with United having managed just three victories in 15 matches this season.
United will return to action against Liverpool on November 22.
