The Northern Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN) has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to ensure that the investigation into the death of Mary Habila is conducted independently, transparently and without political interference.
Habila reportedly died on June 27, 2026, at the residence of the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, NYAN National Speaker, Hon. Faruq Dangi Ahmed, represented by Shuaib Ishaq Yahaya, urged the police to thoroughly investigate everyone connected to the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.
The group called for a comprehensive review of all available evidence, including forensic reports, medical findings, witness statements, CCTV footage where available, and relevant communication records obtained in accordance with the law.
NYAN also stressed the need for a credible post-mortem examination, describing it as essential to maintaining public confidence in the investigation.
“We note the decision of the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a post-mortem examination on the remains of the late Mary Habila. Given the enormous public interest in this case, the credibility of the post-mortem process is of paramount importance,” Yahaya said.
The group urged the police to ensure that the autopsy is conducted professionally and transparently, with appropriate oversight from the deceased’s family, civil society organisations and the National Human Rights Commission, where applicable.
According to NYAN, such measures would enhance public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the investigation’s outcome.
The assembly also called on human rights organisations, women’s rights groups, youth organisations and other justice advocates to monitor the investigation to ensure that due process is followed.
It noted that the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death had generated widespread public concern, adding that every Nigerian deserves a thorough investigation whenever a life is lost under circumstances requiring clarification.
While acknowledging the explanation given by the Minister of Works regarding Habila’s employment status, NYAN said questions surrounding her presence at the minister’s residence should be addressed through a transparent investigation.
The group further urged the management of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, to make available all relevant employment records and official documents relating to Habila’s appointment and alleged secondment.
Describing the case as a test of Nigeria’s commitment to justice and accountability, NYAN maintained that justice must not be influenced by social status or political office.
“The Constitution guarantees equality before the law, and that principle must be demonstrated in this case,” the group stated.
It also appealed to Nigerians to remain calm and allow the investigative process to run its course, while expressing hope that the deceased’s family would receive justice and closure.
