The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has grounded a private aircraft and suspended its operator’s permit following a serious aviation incident in which the aircraft landed on a concrete road under construction in the Ogwashi-Uku area of Delta State after an aborted landing attempt at Asaba Airport.

According to aviation authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 7:43 a.m. local time when the private aircraft conducted a missed approach while attempting to land at the Asaba International Airport. The aircraft subsequently touched down on a concrete road still under construction in the Ogwashi-Uku axis, located near Asaba.

Despite the unusual occurrence, eyewitness reports confirmed that all four crew members on board safely exited the aircraft without sustaining any injuries. The occupants were thereafter transported by road to Asaba, averting what could have been a major aviation disaster.
However, the incident took a more troubling turn when the aircraft reportedly departed the location and flew back to Lagos without obtaining the mandatory regulatory approvals required for such an operation.

According to information made available to the NCAA, the aircraft became airborne again at approximately 11:02 GMT and returned to Lagos despite lacking clearance for departure. Aviation authorities disclosed that Air Traffic Control was only informed after the aircraft had already taken off, raising significant concerns about regulatory compliance, operational safety and aviation security procedures.

Describing the development as a grave breach of aviation regulations and security protocols, the NCAA announced a series of immediate enforcement actions.

Upon the aircraft’s arrival in Lagos, the Authority ordered its immediate grounding pending the conclusion of a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding both the emergency landing and the subsequent unauthorized flight.

In addition, the NCAA confirmed that the flight has been placed under regulatory review while investigators examine the chain of events that led to the occurrence. The Authority is also collaborating with key aviation stakeholders, including the aircraft operator and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), to establish the full facts surrounding the incident.

As part of its enforcement measures, the NCAA has suspended the operator’s Permit for Non-Commercial Flight (PNCF). The Authority further disclosed that it will conduct a thorough review of all operational records, airworthiness documentation, maintenance logs, crew records, and other flight-related documents as part of its statutory oversight responsibilities.

Officials emphasized that additional sanctions may be imposed if investigations reveal further violations of applicable aviation regulations.

Meanwhile, aviation authorities have engaged relevant security agencies, which have reportedly taken the crew into custody for questioning. The agencies are currently assisting investigators in unraveling the circumstances that led to the unauthorized departure and determining whether any regulatory or security infractions were committed.

The incident has sparked renewed discussions within Nigeria’s aviation sector about adherence to safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and the need for strict observance of established flight operation procedures to safeguard lives and maintain the integrity of the nation’s airspace.

The NCAA reiterated its commitment to ensuring the highest standards of aviation safety and assured the public that a full investigation is underway, with appropriate actions to be taken based on its findings.
