The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been drawn against Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau in Group L of the qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducted the official draw for the qualifying stage of the tournament on Tuesday, May 19.
48 countries were split into four pots of 12 teams each for the draw, which decides the path to the expanded 2027 finals co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. One team from each pot makes up each group, and the top two countries in each group advance to the finals.
Morocco, the hosts of the previous edition, was grouped with Gabon, Niger, and Lesotho in Group A. South Africa, which has made significant strides under Hugo Broos, was also given an advantageous draw and will play in Group D.
A notable storyline in Group D is the clash between South Africa and hosts Kenya, coached by former South African international Benni McCarthy, adding an emotional edge to the fixture.
Other headline clashes include a heavyweight Group C pairing of Ghana and Ivory Coast, a repeat of the 2015 AFCON final.
The qualifying campaign is set to commence in September 2026 and will run until March 2027.
