Nigerians evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic tensions arrived safely in Lagos on Thursday as the Federal Government intensified efforts to protect its citizens abroad.
The evacuees landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 10:15 a.m. aboard an Air Peace aircraft.
The evacuation flight forms part of a coordinated response by the Federal Government to renewed attacks reportedly targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, which have heightened fears among Nigerian residents in the country.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, was expected to receive the returnees upon their arrival at the airport.
The latest evacuation comes amid growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa following reports of violence and attacks on foreign-owned businesses and communities.
The Federal Government had earlier assured Nigerians that it was engaging South African authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens and prevent further escalation of the situation.
Authorities have also reiterated their commitment to providing necessary support for affected Nigerians while pursuing diplomatic measures to address the recurring incidents of xenophobic violence.
