The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has announced former Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana and ex-Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, as the Director-General of his campaign organization ahead of the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.
The announcement, which has generated considerable interest within political circles across the state, is being viewed as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the APC’s grassroots mobilization efforts and consolidating support ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive electoral contest.
Senator Obanikoro, a seasoned politician with decades of experience in public service and governance, has held several prominent positions, including serving as a senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Minister of State for Defence, and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana. His appointment is expected to bring significant political experience, organizational capacity, and extensive grassroots networks to the Hamzat campaign.
Political analysts believe the choice of Obanikoro reflects the APC candidate’s commitment to building a broad-based campaign structure capable of reaching diverse stakeholders across Lagos State. The former diplomat is widely recognized for his political influence and longstanding involvement in Lagos politics.
Speaking on the appointment, sources within the campaign described Obanikoro as a respected political strategist whose experience in governance, diplomacy, and electoral mobilization would be instrumental in driving the campaign’s vision and objectives.
The development marks a significant step in the APC’s preparations for the 2027 governorship election, as the party intensifies consultations and strategic engagements aimed at retaining its dominance in Lagos State politics.
Observers say the Hamzat-Obanikoro alliance could play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape ahead of the forthcoming election, with both leaders expected to leverage their experience and networks to galvanize support across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
The appointment has already sparked discussions among party faithful and political stakeholders, underscoring the growing momentum surrounding the APC’s preparations for the 2027 governorship race in Lagos State.
