Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has secured re-election by a commanding margin, clearing the path for Jose Mourinho’s return as the club’s head coach.
The 79-year-old, who has led the Spanish giants for 23 years across two separate spells, won 65 per cent of votes cast by approximately 100,000 club members, defeating challenger Enrique Riquelme, 37, according to official results announced on Sunday.
Speaking after his victory, Perez expressed gratitude to members and reaffirmed his commitment to the club’s continued success.
“We have won the elections and will continue working to keep winning titles,” he said.
Perez also hinted at Mourinho’s imminent appointment, describing the Portuguese tactician as “one of the best coaches in the world” and “a true Madridista.”
Mourinho is expected to be officially unveiled as Real Madrid manager as early as Monday. The Portuguese coach will return to the Santiago Bernabeu 13 years after his departure, with reports indicating that Madrid will pay his current club, Benfica, a €15 million release fee.
“We will continue to take pride in the Santiago Bernabeu, the best stadium in the world,” Perez said. “We are proud to have the best players in the world and proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world.”
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup during a period marked by intense rivalry with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.
The decision to bring Mourinho back comes after Real Madrid endured a disappointing 2025/26 campaign, finishing without a major trophy for the second consecutive season.
Speculation about Mourinho’s return intensified last week when he appeared in a brief video posted on Perez’s campaign Instagram account. Wearing a Real Madrid shirt, Mourinho responded with a simple “Yes” when asked about a potential return.
Meanwhile, defeated candidate Enrique Riquelme had campaigned on an ambitious promise to sign Manchester City and Norway striker Erling Haaland if elected president.
